The tokens on the Maecenas platform represent legal ownership of the artwork by creating a special purpose vehicle (SPV) that owns the artwork. The linkage between tokens and ownership in the SPV is defined in the constitution of the company. This way, users can obtain legal rights of the artwork by obtaining tokens.

Since there is a cost associating with creating the SPV and sorting out the legal ownership, Maecenas will only list artworks with a minimal value of $500,000 and up to several million. Initially, Maecenas will mainly focus on Fine Art (paintings, sculptures, drawings) from the period 1840–1990.

Fractional owners cannot enjoy the artwork because it is not physically with the owners. However, there will be a leasing fee so that the investors are paid for use of the artwork in the gallery.   • Unique ID / Security: When an artist enrolls on the platform, they will receive a unique ID that will be used to authenticate all of their transactions in blockchain. Collectors enrolling in all Public Art will also receive a unique ID, but their personal information will be kept confidential from the artists and the general public. Unique IDs given to artists and collectors will be visible when transactions are documented by APA that allow the history of the artwork to be verified. When an artist puts up tradable artwork or art related items, it will also be assigned a unique ID by APA. Artists will be asked to provide descriptions and artworks they post in all Public Art. When an artist wants to add tradeable artwork on all Public Art, they are required to choose from 1 of 4 security options for identification of artwork such as:
  1. Unique ID with QR code. 
  2. Unique IDs embedded in tamper sensitive stickers and holographic stickers. 
  3. RFID chips (Radio Frequency Identification chips). 
  4. Micro RFID chip in adhesive applied to the artwork.
  • Trade: Artists will list their artwork for the exact number of tokens so that they are willing to exchange works of art. When an art collector discovers a work of art they wish to exchange for trade evidence, they may simply click on the "Acquire Artwork" button on the artwork "details page". Once the button is clicked, the trading process begins. The trade-related smart contract will be coordinated with all Public Art APIs to document transaction details in Blockchain and transfer the APA token to a temporary address and lock it until the artwork is confirmed as received.
  • Shipping: Artists has 2 choices of shipping methods to choose from in All Public Art. To give artists and collectors choices to choose the type of shipping they want (From Fine Art delivery service companies for standard USPS delivery), delivery transactions are done separately from the artwork trade process. Delivery of artwork can vary depending on the needs of the transaction. For example, some artworks need to be insured with special criteria, some have unique size and weight characteristics that require special attention, which is by companies specializing in Fine Art voyages.
